25.1.2014 – Denné príbehy jazzu – Ben Webster

Ben Webster bol jedným z najvýznamnejších tenor saxofonistov swingovej éry 30.-40.rokov 20.storočia, no do svojich 20-tich rokov bol stride klavirista a to pomerne dobrý!

Ako dvadsaťročný mal prvú hodinu saxofónu a skutočne sa mu začal skutočne venovať až v kapele Willis Handy Young-a, otca saxofonistu Lestera Younga.

Prezývaný „the Brute and the Beautiful“ /Surový a nádherný zároveň/, silou a drsnosťou svojej hry dokázal uchvátiť publikum, no na druhej strane bol Ben Webster kráľ balád, jeden z najemocionálnejších saxofonistov v histórii jazzu.

No o tom už inokedy…

Ben Webster was one of the best known tenor saxophonists of swing era of 1930’s and 1940’s, though in his twenties he was still a stride pianist, and a decent one!

As a 20 year old he had his first saxophone lesson and really got into the instrument only in the band of Willis Handy Young, who was the father of tenor saxophonist Lester Young.

Nicknamed „the Brute and the Beautiful“ , through his force and power of his playing he used to capture audiences, but on the other side, there was Ben Webster, the king of ballads, one of the most emotional players in the history of jazz.

Even though Webster seemed like a strong, sometimes even violent man, in his moments of playing he was sometimes not able to keep his tender emotions inside and burst into tears, as in the famous video, when immediately before entering the stage, he learned that Johnny Hodges, his long time friend and section member in Duke Ellington Orchestra, just died.

Webster was a unique player and his ballads were known to have a strong impact on his listeners, but that is another story…
